Lao Rai by Rikii Altamirano.
The body of work titled "Lao Rai" delves into the experiences and aspirations of Timorese individuals who have embarked on a journey of relocation to the United Kingdom, seeking to establish it as their second home. This migration spans three generations since 2002 and signifies pursuing higher education, career training, and the noble endeavour of supporting their families back in Timor-Leste.
The Timorese community in the UK has played a pivotal role in Timor Leste's development, sending approximately one hundred million dollars in remittances annually since 2021, as revealed during a visit by government officials in 2023. The "Lao Rai" project aims to highlight the vital contributions of immigrants, known as “Lao Rai," in Tetun Timor's language and highlight their significance within the broader societal fabric.
"Lao Rai" serves as a powerful testament to the resilience and courage of individuals who have embraced change and overcome adversity in pursuit of a better future. Their stories emphasise the unwavering spirit of determination and the enduring human capacity for adaptation, inspiring us to recognise and celebrate the enriching impact of cultural diversity and the invaluable contributions of immigrants within our communities. These narratives encourage us to foster inclusivity, embrace diversity, and create a more compassionate and understanding society.
